About Crystal Colloidals

Most colloidal silica is not what it claims to be. Crystal is.

Silica behaves differently from the metallic colloids in our range. Most products sold as colloidal silica are actually silicate solutions or contain particles too large to remain stably suspended, which is why they often appear cloudy. A true colloid of 6 nm silica nanoparticles in ultrapure water is clear and colourless. The clarity is itself the proof: turbidity indicates particles outside the nanoparticle range, and dissolved silicates are not colloids at all.

Genuine colloidal silica is different. It contains actual silica nanoparticles, suspended rather than dissolved. Producing it properly requires specialised equipment and a controlled process to keep those particles intact, stable, and evenly distributed without clumping or settling. It takes longer and costs more, which is why most producers take the simpler route.

Crystal has been producing genuine colloidal silica for over two decades, and every batch is independently verified before it reaches you. The exceptional working surface area — 113.3 m²/L — comes from the combination of small particle size and high concentration, and is what makes it different from a standard silica supplement.

Questions and answers

Everything you need to know

What is the difference between colloidal silica and ionic silica?
Ionic silica is a solution of dissolved silica ions in water — typically silica compounds rather than free mineral. True colloidal silica contains actual physical silica nanoparticles suspended in water. The vast majority of products sold as colloidal silica contain ionic forms. Crystal contains genuine 99.9% pure silica nanoparticles, 6 nm in size. A genuine colloidal silica is clear because silica nanoparticles do not absorb visible light, but it should not be cloudy. Cloudiness indicates particles outside the nanoparticle range.
Why is 10 PPM better than 500 PPM?
PPM measures silica concentration by mass and nothing else. A high PPM number tells you nothing about particle size, particle count, or whether the silica is ionic or colloidal. Our 300 PPM formula with 6 nm particles contains stable, well-distributed silica nanoparticles in suspension. The number on the label is not the whole story — particle size and stability matter more.
What if I do not notice any effect?
Individual experience varies considerably. What we can guarantee is the quality of what is in the bottle: particle size, particle content, purity, and the absence of any additives. Our lab certificates confirm this for every batch. If you have questions about application methods or personal use, we are happy to help via our customer service team.
How do I verify this is genuine quality?
Three things. First, the clarity: genuine colloidal silica is clear and colourless, but it should not be cloudy. Cloudiness indicates particles too large to remain in stable suspension. Second, the absence of foam: shake the bottle vigorously, persistent foam above the liquid means protein binders are present. Crystal produces no foam. Third, our downloadable lab certificate, available on this page, shows the Dynamic Light Scattering particle measurement data and ICP-MS concentration data for the specific batch — measured by the Institute of Public Health in Ostrava (ISO/IEC 17025 accredited, AZL 1393).
Why is colloidal silica clear?
Silica nanoparticles do not absorb visible light the way metallic nanoparticles do, so a true colloidal silica is clear and colourless. This is opposite to colloidal gold or silver, where colour is the visual indicator of true colloidal content. For silica, the indicator is the absence of cloudiness or turbidity. Cloudy products contain particles too large to remain stable in suspension, or are mixed with other compounds. Crystal Colloidal Silica is filtered through ultrapure water and contains 99.9% pure silica nanoparticles only.
What does your satisfaction guarantee cover?
We stand behind every bottle we make. If you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, contact us and we will make it right. That might mean a replacement, a refund, or simply taking the time to answer your questions properly. We have been making this product since 1998 and our confidence in it is genuine. If it does not meet your expectations, we want to know.
What does for external use only mean?
Under European Regulation EC No. 1925/2006, colloidal silica cannot be sold as a dietary supplement or food additive in the EU. This means we are required by law to label this product for external use only. This is a regulatory classification about how we can market the product, not a statement about its composition. We encourage you to research independently and speak with a healthcare professional with any specific questions.
